If you’ve ever tried to plan a girls’ trip via text message, you’ll know that some things are just better left to the experts.

Flights for a group and one-of-a-kind, curated experiences that transcend Instagram photos aren't easily done on AirBnB.

By working with a certified travel advisor, planning your trip actually becomes enjoyable instead of frustrating and overwhelming. Our role at SafariSmiths Travel is to make your planning process seamless and personalized, taking care of all the details so that you can focus on creating unforgettable memories during your journey.

Jennifer Markus, a native Pittsburgher, met Kyle Smith on safari in South Africa in 2019. One year and a business plan later, they created SafariSmiths Travel from a mutual love of exploration, adventure, and sharing their passion for travel with others across the globe. You can learn more about Jen and Kyle here.

Traveling with a knowledgeable and reliable guide during your trip is significant, especially in a location where potential barriers such as language and culture can arise. Not only can travel guides provide valuable insight into local culture and history, but they can usually facilitate access to unique and exciting experiences that general travelers can’t get.

Most seasoned travelers know that the only thing to expect while on a trip is usually the unexpected. Not every moment may be perfect, but the flexible and adaptable travel guides in your corner will help to overcome any challenges that arise with swift professionalism.

Jen and Kyle have spent years researching and creating dozens of custom itineraries for their clients, and have learned a few things about themselves along the way. Here are some lessons learned, our absolute favorite travel moments, and what’s coming up next!

Outside the obvious like passports and phone chargers, what’s one item that you never leave home without when traveling?
Jen: Definitely an extra change of clothes and a toothbrush in case my luggage gets lost, or if flights are delayed!
Kyle: I never leave without eye drops or antihistamines – in a lot of African countries, these can be hard to come by. With all of the tiny insects out there in unspoiled places, you can get itchy from time to time.

You guys have been on so many adventures. Do you have a favorite experience?
Jen: Oh, trekking with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda was incredible.
Kyle: Yeah, the opportunity to photograph and spend time face-to-face with those amazing animals was unreal.

What’s next on the old travel bucket list?
Jen: Morocco! There are a few places in Europe, too, but Morocco is at the top.
Kyle: Vegas, baby! We’re heading there soon for a travel conference. I’m really excited.
