Expert-Led Safari Planning

Designed by people who know safari, not just people who sell travel.

There's a difference between booking travel and designing it properly. SafariSmiths was built by Kyle and Jen — a safari guide and a luxury travel specialist — because they got frustrated with the gap between what African travel can be and what most agencies actually deliver.

Kyle's background is in-field safari guiding and destination knowledge built on the ground, not in a brochure. Jen brings luxury travel planning expertise and the kind of supplier relationships that take years to earn. Together, they design journeys that are sharper, more personal, and more honest than what most clients have experienced before.

Founder-led planning — you speak with the experts, not a call centre
Safari knowledge built through years of in-field guiding and destination travel
Carefully selected lodges and routes — nothing recommended that hasn't been vetted

Decision Support

Which trip is right for you?

Common questions answered honestly. Choosing between two destinations is one of the most useful conversations we have with clients — here's how we usually break it down.

Rwanda

Gorilla & Wildlife Safari

Africa's most polished primate destination. Shorter distances, smoother logistics, and a premium lodge experience from arrival to departure.

Best for
  • Shorter, more refined trips — typically 7 to 8 days
  • Gorilla trekking in a beautifully managed, scenic setting
  • Couples, honeymooners, and travellers who prefer comfort and efficiency
  • First-time Africa visitors wanting a seamless, premium introduction
  • Big Five-style viewing with an optional Akagera National Park extension
Good to know
  • Generally the more expensive option — permit costs are significant
  • Less broad wildlife variety without an Akagera extension
  • Not the right choice for travellers wanting a long, varied road safari
Mountain GorillaGolden MonkeyElephantBuffaloHippoGiraffeBirdlife
Uganda

Gorilla, Chimp & Wildlife Safari

A richer, more varied safari with gorilla trekking, chimpanzee encounters, and classic East African wildlife all in a single immersive journey.

Best for
  • Gorilla and chimpanzee combination experiences in one trip
  • Better value — more wildlife, more variety, lower cost than Rwanda
  • Wildlife lovers, adventurous couples, families with older children
  • Travellers comfortable with longer, scenic overland transfers
  • Those who want a fuller, more immersive safari over 8 to 10 days
Good to know
  • Longer road transfers between key wildlife regions
  • Less polished infrastructure than Rwanda
  • Best suited to adventure-minded travellers with time on their side

Best for
  • Big cat encounters and savannah drama in the Maasai Mara
  • Great Migration timing from July to October
  • Private conservancies for exclusive, off-road game viewing
  • Easy safari-plus-beach combinations via the Kenyan coast or Seychelles
  • Travellers wanting excellent infrastructure and smooth logistics
Good to know
  • Can feel busier in peak season than southern African equivalents
  • Private conservancies add cost but significantly improve the experience
LionLeopardCheetahElephantWildebeestZebra
Tanzania

Serengeti & Zanzibar

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, the Great Migration in its full northern sweep, and a Zanzibar beach finish. Tanzania is the classic African safari, done at its finest.

Best for
  • Serengeti game viewing at any time of year — consistently exceptional
  • Ngorongoro Crater — one of Africa's most concentrated wildlife areas
  • Great Migration routes across the Serengeti, particularly January to March
  • Zanzibar beach extension for a natural safari-and-coast combination
  • Kilimanjaro extensions for travellers wanting an adventure element
Good to know
  • Serengeti is large — positioning matters for the best game viewing
  • Internal flight logistics need careful planning across regions

Big Five, Cape & Golf

The most accessible first-Africa experience. Big Five safaris, Cape Town, the Winelands, malaria-free options, golf, and some of the world's best food.

  • Families — including malaria-free Big Five options
  • Golf travellers — some of the world's most scenic courses
  • Travellers wanting safari combined with city, wine, and coast
  • A wide range of budgets — more accessible than most African destinations
Good to know
  • Game reserves are fenced — a different feel from the open wilderness of East Africa
  • Less wild in character than Botswana, Zambia, or Tanzania

Botswana

Okavango Delta & Wilderness

Africa's most exclusive safari destination. Ultra-premium wilderness, private concessions, water-based safari, and some of the lowest tourist density on the continent.

Best for
  • Travellers who want wilderness almost entirely to themselves
  • Okavango Delta mokoro and boat safari — genuinely extraordinary
  • Serious wildlife travellers who value exclusivity and quality above all else
  • Repeat Africa visitors ready to invest in the finest safari lodges
Good to know
  • Significant cost — Botswana is deliberately high-value, low-volume
  • Best suited to experienced safari travellers

Gorilla Trekking

Primate & Forest Safari

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda is a different experience to a savannah safari entirely — more intimate, more physical, and genuinely rare.

Best for
  • Travellers who want a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with mountain gorillas
  • East Africa-focused trips combining forest and wildlife
  • Travellers comfortable with physical trekking in mountain forest terrain
  • Those willing to plan well in advance — permits are limited and in demand
Good to know
  • Permits are required and must be secured in advance — we handle this
  • Trekking can be strenuous depending on where the gorilla group is found
  • Can be combined with savannah safari for a fully rounded East Africa journey

Best for
  • Travellers who want the classic Africa experience with maximum game variety
  • First-time safari visitors wanting the full savannah experience
  • Families, couples, and photographers

How It Works

From first conversation to departure

Safari planning is a process, not a click. Here's how we move from a first conversation to a confirmed, fully prepared journey.

01
Choose your safari style

Browse the safari styles and journey options above, or use the estimator to get a planning figure. You don't need to have everything decided before reaching out.

02
Submit an inquiry

Use the estimator CTA or the form below to send your preferences. The more detail you give us, the faster we can come back with something useful.

03
Speak with a specialist

Kyle or Jen will review your inquiry and come back within one business day. An honest conversation about the right trip, the right timing, and the right budget.

04
We check availability

We confirm lodge space, gorilla and chimp permit availability, internal flights, and routing. Nothing is confirmed until we know it can actually be delivered.

05
Approve your itinerary

You review a detailed itinerary and confirm it works. Once you're happy, a deposit secures your dates, lodges, and permits.

06
We handle everything else

Final documents, pre-departure preparation, packing guidance, local contacts, and everything you need to arrive in Africa with complete confidence.

    A note on wildlife

    Sightings are never guaranteed

Safari is a wild experience. While gorilla and chimpanzee trekking permits significantly increase the likelihood of an encounter, no agency can guarantee specific sightings. This is part of what makes the experience so extraordinary — and so real. We always want our clients to travel with honest expectations, and we'll be direct with you about what to expect before you go.

    Common Questions

    What travellers usually ask first

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often. If yours isn't here, just ask.

How much does a safari cost?+
Safari pricing depends on destination, dates, lodges, routing, flights, permits, park fees, rooming, and selected experiences. Use the Trip Budget Calculator to tell us what you are comfortable spending, and SafariSmiths will prepare a personalised quote after reviewing your details. For gorilla trekking, permits are a major cost driver and availability must be confirmed before quoting.
Is Rwanda or Uganda better for gorilla trekking?+
Rwanda is better for shorter, premium-focused trips — typically 7 to 8 days — where the priority is quality, efficiency, and a refined lodge experience. Uganda is better for travellers wanting gorillas alongside chimpanzees and wider wildlife variety, over a longer journey (8 to 10 days), at a more accessible price point. Both offer genuine encounters with mountain gorillas. Rwanda costs more; Uganda delivers more breadth.
When is the best time to go on safari in Africa?+
It depends heavily on where you're going and what you want to see. For gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda, the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer easier trekking conditions. For East Africa's Great Migration, July to October puts you at the Mara River crossing in Kenya. For South Africa's private reserves, the dry winter months (May to September) offer excellent game viewing as vegetation thins out. We'll match your preferred dates to the right destination.
Can I combine safari with a beach extension?+
Yes — and it's one of the most popular combinations we design. East African safaris pair naturally with Seychelles, Zanzibar, Mombasa, or the Kenyan coast. Southern African safaris combine well with Mozambique, Seychelles, or Mauritius. The Seychelles is particularly popular as a post-safari destination because it's genuinely one of the finest beach destinations in the world, the logistics are straightforward, and the contrast with the bush is hard to beat.
Which country is best for a first African safari?+
South Africa is the most accessible first safari destination for most international travellers — excellent infrastructure, malaria-free Big Five options, Cape Town as a world-class city add-on, and a wide range of budgets. Kenya is a close second for those wanting the classic East African savannah experience. Both are strong choices. Rwanda is excellent for a first safari if the priority is gorilla trekking over open-plain wildlife. Uganda is better for more adventurous first-timers with more time available.
Is South Africa good for families?+
South Africa is generally the best African safari destination for families — particularly the malaria-free private reserves in the Eastern Cape and parts of the Western Cape. These offer Big Five game viewing without malaria medication for children, with well-set-up family lodges and a shorter flight from most origins. The addition of Cape Town makes it a genuinely complete family itinerary. Other destinations like Kenya and Tanzania can work well for families with older children (12+), but need more careful lodge selection.
Do I need permits for gorilla trekking?+
Yes — gorilla trekking permits are mandatory, strictly controlled, and must be secured well in advance. Permits are issued daily per gorilla group and numbers are tightly limited to protect the gorillas and maintain the quality of the experience. Rwanda permits currently cost USD 1,500 per person. Uganda permits are USD 700 per person. We handle permit securing as part of the booking process — but it's one of the strongest reasons to plan and book your gorilla safari as far ahead as possible, particularly for peak season travel.
How far in advance should I book?+
For gorilla trekking, we recommend booking at least 6 months in advance for peak season (July to September, December to January). Rwanda permits and quality lodges sell out quickly, and availability narrows considerably within 3 months of travel. For Big Five safari destinations like South Africa and Kenya, 4 to 6 months is a good lead time. For more flexible travel outside peak seasons, 3 to 4 months is usually sufficient — but earlier always gives us more options to work with.
Are these trips private or group-based?+
All SafariSmiths journeys are fully private. Your safari vehicle, your guide, your routing — it's designed entirely around your group, nobody else's. You won't share a game drive with strangers or follow a fixed group schedule. We don't run group tours. This is one of the clearest ways a privately designed safari differs from a packaged itinerary — and it makes a significant difference to the overall experience.
Can SafariSmiths arrange golf or fishing safaris?+
Yes. Golf safaris are one of our specialities — particularly in South Africa, where some of the world's most scenic courses sit alongside excellent wildlife destinations. We design itineraries that combine great golf with safari drives, Winelands, coast, and city stays. For fishing, we cover destinations including the Zambezi (tiger fish), Lake Victoria (Nile perch), the Seychelles (deep-sea), and highland fly fishing in Kenya and Tanzania. Tell us what kind of fishing or golf you want and we'll build around it.
